This ecological microcosm of sub-Saharan Africa, host to montane forest, savanna, woodland, vast lakes, grassland, swamps and rivers supports an astonishing 30,000 large animals. Lions saunter and laze away the day in the grasslands, Leopards hang suspended in the forks of trees, while Rhinoceros and Buffalo break up the lighter scenery with their large, dark figures – all unperturbed by the presence of jaw-dropped humans. However, there is perhaps one animal that stands above the rest here (quite literally), the African Elephant, specifically the large ‘tuskers’.
Here, thanks to good conservation and a lack of poaching, old bulls roam freely, enjoying their ‘retirement’. Having grown for more than 50 years, their tusks are nothing short of massive, some practically digging ruts into the ground as the old boys wander alone from one food source to the next. When first seen, their nickname becomes clear, these beasts seem almost unreal, a sentiment only further cemented when their curiosity brings them in a little closer.
